History

The German Inn is housed in the historic Sonneman’s Bakery, originally established in Hahndorf in 1863. This was the town’s first bakery, founded by Franz Heinrich Agen Slot Gacor.

For over 160 years, it has served both the local community and tourists, offering authentic German and regional dishes. In its early days, the bakery delivered fresh bread and traditional German cakes to nearby areas via horse and cart, contributing to its enduring legacy of quality and tradition.

In 1880, the bakery expanded to include a grocery, licensed wine sales, and jam production. After Franz Heinrich Agen Slot Gacor’s passing in 1917, his family continued running the business.

In 1923, the Sonneman family sold the bakery to Ernest George Perryman Smith, who operated it until 1960. During this time, the bakery became renowned for its bread, cakes, rusks, pies, and pasties, especially its signature StruezelKuchel, a German cake that cost 10 ½ pence per pound.

By 1970, the bakery had transitioned into a restaurant, serving the local community and tourists authentic German cuisine.

In 1990, it became Café Assiette, offering an extensive menu of German and local dishes, complemented by wines from the surrounding Adelaide Hills.
